 Dereje Ashenafi is an Associate in MLA’s Mining, Energy, and Real Estate Practice Groups. He also closely works with MLA‘s Corporate and Tax Team.  Before joining MLA, Dereje worked as a Legal Advisor at the Ethiopian Industrial Parks Development Corporation for 2 years, and at a private law office for nearly 3 years.

At MLA, Dereje Advises clients on corporate, mining, energy, and real estate matters.

• LL.B, Addis Ababa University School of Law, Ethiopia, with Great Distinction (2018).

• Advised an international energy company in the incorporation of a subsidiary for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity.
• Conducted limited due diligence for an embassy based in Ethiopia on the lease of immovable and related issues.
• Advised an international tobacco company on the Ethiopian tobacco sector regulations.
• Advised an embassy based in Ethiopia on land acquisitions and lease of immovable.
• Advised and assisted an international mining company in its court dispute with the Ethiopian Ministry of Mines on license termination issues.
• Assisted an international mining company in the issuance of new shares.
• Assisted a Türkiye company in the acquisition of immovable property.
• Advised an Italian energy company in its PPP solar projects in Ethiopia.
• Co-authored jurisdictional legal research on the Ethiopian data protection regime for One Trust DataGuidance (London).
• Advised a bidding consortium in its bid for 250MW solar projects in Ethiopia.
• Advised Meta Platforms, Inc., formerly named Facebook, Inc., on the Ethiopian digital media regulations.
