Biography

Getu Shiferaw is a partner in MLA’s Corporate and Tax Practice. His practice encompasses general corporate and commercial law, with specializations in mergers and acquisitions, private equity, financial market regulations, project finance, sovereign debt and sovereign debt guarantee and FDI. Since 2013, Getu has been advising foreign and domestic investors on Ethiopian investment law, corporate and commercial law, investment vehicles for FDI, project finance and security devices.

Education

  • LL.B, Addis Ababa University School of Law, Ethiopia, with Very Great Distinction (2011).
  • LL.M in Business Law, Addis Ababa University School of Law, Ethiopia, (2016).

Selected Experience

 

  • Conducted compliance and legal due diligence investigation and produced a report on behalf of a prominent international financial institution in connection with a multimillion-dollar loan agreement to be entered with a local company in the hospitality sector.

 

  • Advised a bank from China in relation to its security interest over security vehicles to be imported to Ethiopia on temporary importation for the purpose of providing security service to oil and gas exploration project in Ethiopia.

 

  • Incorporated subsidiary companies for multinational electrical, electronics, engines and medical equipment manufacturing conglomerate from the US and a product quality verification company from France.

 

  • Prepared jurisdictional legal due diligence opinion for a number of foreign investors based on the operational sector of their respective investment.

 

  • Acted for foreign companies in relation to transfer of shares of their subsidiaries in Ethiopia;

 

  • Advised a Chinese Bank in relation to concessional loan agreement to the Ethiopian Government to finance road projects in Ethiopia;

 

  • Advised a Chinese Bank in relation to three related loan facilities to Ethiopian government owned public corporation and issued legal opinion on the legality, validity and enforceability of the loan agreements;

 

  •  Advised a number of foreign banks and foreign shareholders of companies incorporated in Ethiopian on foreign exchange regulations of Ethiopia;

 

  • Advised a Chinese Bank in relation to a commercial loan to an Ethiopian subsidiary of Chinese company operating in Ethiopia.
